Design and Construction of Liner Systems

After participating in this lecture you will be able to:

  • Understand the hydraulic performance of different liner systems.
  • Understand the factors controlling performance of liners.
  • Calculate the flow through a liner system.
  • Estimate the service life of liners under harsh environment.

Lining systems are used at the base of landfills, ponds and other fluid containments to prevent the flow of water, contaminants and other fluids into the ground. A typical liner system may consist of compacted clay, geosynthetic clay, and/or a geomembrane. Most civil and environmental engineers need a working understanding of basic concepts to gain confidence in dealing with a variety of liners and their proper design and construction.

This lecture is designed so that participants can better understand liners and learn how to design and construct a safe and sustainable liner. All key concepts will be explained and emphasis will be placed on the practical application of the information provided.
