Concrete Pavement Design and Construction

1.5 Professional Development Hours

After Participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand key components and factors necessary for the cost-effective design of rigid pavements
  • Be able to identify design and construction features that may negatively impact the performance of pavements
  • Assist in developing specifications to ensure the performance of pavements
  • Understand maintenance and rehabilitation needs and techniques
  • Communicate and promote good road design and construction practices

Description

Many agencies across Canada have had a strong focus on our transportation infrastructure debt. Our focus has change from the construction of new infrastructure to the maintenance and rehabilitation of our existing roadways and highways. While the majority of the roadways in Canada are surfaced with asphalt, there has been a strong move towards the construction of longer life pavements with reduced maintenance. The Cities of Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal regularly use concrete surfaced pavements. The Provinces of Manitoba, Ontario and Québec have long shown the benefits of reduced life-cycle cost for concrete pavements.

This course provides an overview of the most popular design methods for concrete pavements ranging from municipal roadways to highways and airport facilities and focuses on methods and procedures to evaluate pavement condition to determine how we can cost-effectively extend their service life. Case studies show examples of pavement condition, why it is in the condition and how best to cost-effectively treat defects to maximize the life of the asset. Pavement preservation and life-cycle cost procedures are discussed to assist asset managers in conveying the importance of timely maintenance and rehabilitation actions.

Course Outline

This course covers:

  • Introduction to the design of rigid pavements. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) 1993 pavement design procedure
  • Introduction to the new AASHTOWare Pavement ME mechanistic-empirical method
  • Primary design, specification and construction factors that contribute to the long-term functional and structural performance of pavements ranging from parking lots to municipal roadways, airports and major highways
  • Positive and negative design features and construction conditions are presented to give the participant a good understanding of what we can do better to ensure the cost-effective use of transportation investments

Who Should Attend

  • Personnel involved in the design or management of transportation assets
  • Pavement network owners and administrators
  • Engineers and technicians involved in the design, evaluation and management of pavements
  • Provincial, municipal and local agencies
