Cost-Effective Assessment of Pavement Condition
After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- To understand the benefits and costs to develop an understanding of the condition of roadway infrastructure
- Be able to develop an appropriate scope, data needs and frequency of testing for pavement testing
- Understand the market and value of using specialized equipment for the evaluation of pavement condition
- Recognize indicators that may reduce the life of pavements if not addressed in a timely and logical fashion
Description
Municipalities and other road agencies use Pavement Management Systems (PMS) to determine the condition of the road network in order to determine deficiencies, and develop rehabilitation strategies and funding needs for their road rehabilitation programs. The degree of sophistication of PMS systems ranges from simple spreadsheets to sophisticated custom-built systems that can optimize rehabilitation strategies that best optimize expenditures. In all cases, however, the information generated by the PMS system depends on the accuracy of the pavement condition information used as input to PMS. Pavement condition information may consist of a combination of the evaluation of pavement distresses gathered manually through visual observations, while other condition indicators, such as smoothness, structural capacity, friction, cross-slope, etc., are measured by mechanical devices.
This webinar provides an understanding of the basics of pavement condition evaluation, an understanding of what the data means and how it can be used to improve pavement maintenance and rehabilitation decision making. Timely and appropriate intervention action can lead to longer pavement life and higher quality experience for the users of our infrastructure and, when used as an effective part of pavement management, reduce the overall life-cycle cost of the roadway network.
