Principals of Soil Mechanics Laboratory Testing

14 Professional Development Hours

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Grasp the principles of both basic and advanced soil mechanics laboratory testing
  • Analyze and interpret soil mechanics laboratory test results
  • Determine geotechnical design parameters from laboratory tests
  • Strategically plan and select the most suitable laboratory tests for geotechnical engineering projects
  • Apply soil mechanics laboratory testing results to real-world geotechnical challenges

Description
Soil mechanics laboratory testing and experimentation are essential in modern construction projects for soil characterization, compaction control, seepage analysis, and settlement analysis. Understanding these concepts is crucial for the design of foundations, retaining walls, dams, or slope stability. This course adheres to ASTM standard methods wherever applicable, ensuring that the practices taught are industry-compliant and widely recognized.

The course begins with a comprehensive review of basic tests used to determine soil index properties, including soil gradation, Atterberg limits, and hydrometer analysis. It then explores standard and modified Proctor compaction tests and hydraulic conductivity measurements in depth. Participants will then delve into various experiments for measuring soil compressibility and shear strength, such as incremental-loading and constant rate of strain oedometer tests, direct shear tests, triaxial tests, direct, simple shear, and ring shear tests.

In addition to describing testing equipment and procedures, the course provides many examples for interpreting and analyzing laboratory tests and determining soil properties. Several instructive short videos will demonstrate the setup, operation, sample preparation, and execution of soil mechanics laboratory tests, ensuring a hands-on learning experience. Participants will also learn how to interpret experimental results and apply them to engineering design, with practical working examples provided for each test.

Who Should Attend
This course is designed for a wide range of professionals involved in the geotechnical and civil engineering sectors.

Geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and laboratory technicians who are responsible for soil testing and analysis will find this course particularly beneficial. Contractors and construction managers looking to ensure the integrity of their projects through accurate soil testing will gain valuable insights. City managers and municipal planners involved in infrastructure development, as well as designers focused on foundational and structural stability, will also benefit from the course’s comprehensive approach.

Consulting engineers and environmental engineers seeking to broaden their expertise in soil mechanics and laboratory testing will discover new techniques and methodologies to apply to their projects. Laboratory equipment vendors and suppliers will gain a deeper understanding of the tests and procedures critical to their industry, enhancing their ability to support their clients.
