After Participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Comprehend the purpose, requirements & elements of protective relaying
  • Identify the various protection schemes
  • Use standard relaying terminology
  • Recognize the various types of circuit breakers
  • Understand the various relay schemes and the types of relays used

Starting with fundamental relaying terminology, the purpose, requirements & elements of protective relaying are examined along with the simplest of protection schemes, including surge protectors, fuses and reclosers. Various types of circuit breakers are introduced as well their open and close controls. Instantaneous and timed overcurrent protection follows. Differential Protection, Pilot Wire Protection and Impedance Relaying are studied, with examples from yesterday’s electromechanical relays, and today’s more modern, IED Relays.

Permissive Overreach, Directional Comparison Protection and the use of transfer tripping & remote tripping are examined.
