Electrical Engineering Fundamentals for Non-Electrical Engineers

After participating in the seminar, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between AC and DC systems
  • Assess system power factor based on data collected through field measurements
  • Comprehend and apply important electrical system concepts, such as, power quality, load factor and service factor, demand, peak demand, distinction between electrical energy and electrical power, and associated computation methods.
  • Gain understanding of how to interpret electrical one-line and comprehensive wiring diagrams.
  • Understand how electrical power bills are calculated under large industrial and commercial contract scenarios, and take away some tips on electrical cost reduction.

Program Description
Learn how to hold meaningful interaction with electrical engineers, electrical contractors and electricians. Learn basic principles of electricity in an easy to understand format. Learn to perform straightforward and common calculations associated with voltage, current, power and power factor. Discussions on electrical, equipment, components, devices and test instrumentation are included.

Important concepts in electrical safety are introduced. Learn to understand jargon used by electrical engineers and attain some understanding of electrical drawings, electrical power bills, functions of PLC’s and transformers, power instrumentation, and power distribution equipment.

  • Principles of Electricity: AC and DC
  • Phasor, polar and rectangular representation of AC
  • Brief introduction to three-phase AC
  • Power factor, power quality, load factor and service factor
  • Electrical Equipment and Instrumentation in Industrial Applications; this would include motors, transformers, switchgear, over current protection devices, power/energy monitoring systems
  • Generic discussion on electrical code
  • General discussion on arc flash and associated PPE
  • Electrical Control Systems; i.e. Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs),
  • Understanding Electrical Drawings and Documentation
  • Understanding Electrical Power Bills and Ways to Reduce the Energy Cost
