Small and Medium Communal Wastewater Treatment Systems
After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the characteristics and strength of wastewater based on the types and concentrations of contaminating substances
- Recognize physical, chemical and biological contaminants of wastewater
- Identify efficient types of wastewater treatment and disposal systems for small and medium communities
- Design small and medium communal wastewater treatment systems based on the characteristics of wastewater, availability of land, site location and economic considerations
- Identify decision-making criteria and management aspects of wastewater treatment in small and medium communities
Description
Small and medium communities usually use decentralized or on-site systems to collect, treat and reuse/dispose treated wastewater at or near the generation point. Managed decentralized or on-site wastewater systems in small and medium communities are gaining increasing attention since they are viable, cost-effective, and offer long-term alternatives to centralized wastewater treatment facilities. This course discusses wastewater treatment in small and medium communities, focusing on the specific characteristics of these types of treatment systems, including flexibility in management, site conditions, cost-effectiveness and environmental protection requirements. The operation principles and design of various types of small and medium communal wastewater treatment systems will be discussed and case studies will be presented.
