Lagoons are used as a stand-alone technology for the treatment of domestic effluents, particularly in small and medium communities. Due to the simplicity of lagoons compared to activated sludge processes, lagoon operation relies on the basics of good design, proper operation, and maintenance.
This course covers the physical, chemical, and biological factors of lagoon efficiency; design considerations; operation and maintenance considerations; and, methods that help in upgrading lagoon effluents. You will also learn how lagoons can be used as polishing steps for removing nutrients such as phosphorus.
