Course Description

This course provides a concise overview and non-technical explanation of the Metaverse. This is a constellation of virtual worlds and digital universes that you can access through an Avatar -- a 3D representation of yourself. While still evolving, it’s on course to be a deep sensory virtual environment and alternative reality experience. It will be a shared, persistent, real-time and social online space. It’s basically like the real world that we live in – but on a virtual platform. The metaverse is expected to take shape over the next decade with the rapid convergence of technologies such as AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality), IoT (Internet of Things), 5G, blockchain, and cloud computing.

A multitude of companies -- from big tech to the Big Four -- have announced ambitious plans to contribute to this virtual “gold rush.” Ultimately, the metaverse represents the natural evolution of the Internet, the next phase of the mobile web, and potentially the future of mankind. Currently, we are on the edge of the Metaverse like we were on the edge of the Internet in 1995. Then as now, the space is positioned to explode in unpredictable and perhaps unimaginable ways.
