Electronics for Mechanical Engineers

After Participating in The Course, You Will Be Able To:

  • Understand and recognize analogue and digital circuits
  • Understand the functioning and application of diodes and transistors in electronics circuits
  • Realize the performance and be able to design/build/repair rectifiers and power supplies
  • Gain knowledge about inverters and power converters
  • Learn how a transistor can be used for switching or for amplification
  • Realize the performance and classification of amplifiers for signal amplification in different applications

Nowadays there are lots of electromechanical systems with embedded electronics for their control. A knowledge of the fundamentals of electronics and major functioning of electronic devices can assist a mechanical engineer to better communicate with electrical and electronics engineers collaborating for the design/manufacturing of these systems.

This course is aimed for mechanical engineers working in areas overlapping with electrical engineers or working on interdisciplinary projects. It offers all the theoretical knowledge that a mechanical engineer lacks in fundamentals of electronics.

The course is conducted by a mechanical engineer knowledgeable of the material and based on a book describing the vital knowledge of electronics for non-electrical engineers. The course covers the basics and practical applications of diodes, regulator diodes, power supplies, amplifiers and the distinction between analog and digital circuits.

  • Introduction to analog and digital electronics
  • Semiconductors and PN junction
  • Diode (Types, properties, characteristics and applications)
  • Diode circuits and applications
  • Transistor (Bipolar Junction Transistor, BJT and Field Effect Transistor, FET)
  • Transistor circuits (switching circuits and amplifiers)
  • Amplifier types and classes
  • Switchable diodes and gated transistor
  • Electrical coupling and impedance matching
  • Power converters (Single-phase and 3-phase rectifiers and inverters)
