7 Professional Development Hours

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the role and concept of LIDs in stormwater management systems in the context of urban land development
  • Understand the regulatory framework and guidelines
  • Understand different types of LIDs, their applicability and concept/basic design
  • Understand the parameters influencing LID design
  • Gain an introductory understanding of the LID Treatment Train Tool (developed by Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Ontario)

Description
The main goal of Low Impact Development (LID) practices as part of stormwater management systems is to tackle problems related to urban stormwater runoff, including erosion, sedimentation and pollution.

While the traditional approach to dealing with stormwater has been to move it away from city streets as quickly and efficiently as possible, LID, by contrast, deals with stormwater by mimicking natural water cycles.

LID increases the infiltration of stormwater into the soil, where it can be filtered and/or absorbed by plants. LID is a lower-cost alternative to conventional grey infrastructure and provides a number of ecological, economic and social benefits.

This course is developed based on the applicable guidelines and regulatory requirements set in Ontario, including but not limited to the Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA). However, the concept applies to other jurisdictions in Canada.

This course will provide the participants with a comprehensive understanding of the concept and requirements of LIDs, LID types and their applicability, applicable guidelines and regulatory framework (in Ontario), conceptual design of LIDs and introduction to the recently developed LID Treatment Train Tool (by LSRCA). An example of LID selection and design will also be reviewed.
