After participating in this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the three-dimensional modeling aspects and techniques of steel industrial buildings
  • Understand and quantify the concept of structure stability and buckling of columns
  • Understand the stability concepts of beam-columns and the lateral torsional buckling of steel beams
  • Design steel plate girders and crane-supporting steel girders with the provisions of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-S16-14
  • Understand the behaviour and design of steel connections


Topics covered in this course include: three-dimensional modeling aspects and techniques of steel structures, behaviour of steel structures and industrial buildings, the concepts of structure stability and buckling of columns, the stability concepts for beam-columns, buckling analysis of frames using finite element modelling, lateral torsional buckling of steel beams, design of crane-supporting steel girders, plate girders, and steel connections.

  • Recognize different types of structural systems used to provide lateral resistance for industrial steel buildings Structural system

  • Quantify the steel rigidity of different steel members
  • Calculate the lateral torsional buckling of narrow rectangular beams under pure moments

Design of steel plate girders

  • Design plate girders for bending and shear
  • Calculate required stiffeners for shear moments

Mahdy A. Hamada, Ph.D., P.Eng., M.ASCE, M.CSCE

Mahdy is the president and founder of Intelligent Engineering Design Ltd. (IE Design) and an Adjunct Research and Assistant Professor LDA at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The University of Western Ontario.

He has over 16 years of experience in teaching, research and consulting in structural engineering. He was consulted on major projects in Canada, Middle-East and Gulf Area, conducting complete analysis and design of several high-rise, mid-rise, industrial buildings and bridges in more than 6 countries. He is a member of the Educational Committee (FLC – Canada) Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and of the task committee on Electrical Transmission Line Structural Loading responsible for updating the American Society of Civil Engineers Manual of Practice 74. Mahdy was the recipient of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, the most prestigious Natural Science and Engineering Research (NSERC) postgraduate scholarship. He successfully completed the Western Certificate/Diploma in University Teaching and Learning from The University of Western Ontario.
