After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand inspection procedures, bridge and culvert components, material defects and performance defects
  • Set out requirements for detailed (virtual) inspections and condition rating of structures and their components
  • Provide guidelines for the need to carry out further investigations and special studies
  • Describe various types of procedures and equipment for the non-destructive material testing

Description
In this course, we shall cover the main bridge and culvert components, inspection, strategies for a sustainable maintenance/rehabilitation concept for both superstructures and substructures. The main objective is mainly to set out a sound inspection in compliance with OSIM regulations and its application on major structure examples. The course will provide a series of inspection reports, for existing bridges through a step-by step procedure, and to ensure a prompt discovery of any deterioration, defects, or structural deficiencies that could be hazardous to road network operation, and to determine the extent of bridge deterioration and select proper repair work or bridge replacement candidates.

This course is designed to provide you with bridge inspection fundamentals. You will gain an introduction to the elementary concepts of bridge inspection, bridge functions, and bridge inspection terminology. The course will also illustrate and discuss the difference between material defects and performance defects. This course will allow engineers and practitioners to enforcing a sound decision making for a rehabilitation action.

This course has been developed for municipal and provincial employees and consultants involved in inspecting bridges or in charge of a bridge inspection and maintenance programs. The course is also useful for bridge engineers involved in the rating and evaluation of existing structures. A background in bridge engineering is strongly recommended.

This introductory course covers bridge components and elements, bridge mechanics, design features, bridge materials, decks, superstructures, bearings, substructures, inspection preparations, inspection reporting activities, and work area safety.

Instructor

Adel R. Zaki, P.Eng.

Adel R. Zaki is the Chief Engineer of bridges and structures with SNC-Lavalin. In his 40 years in civil engineering practice, Mr. Zaki has been engaged by Canada’s foremost engineering consulting firms, becoming an expert in the design and management for major bridge projects in North America and internationally.

In 1995, the World Bank recognized Mr. Zaki as an international specialist for his professional services in planning, project management and the design of railway and highway infrastructures.

Mr. Zaki has published more than twenty technical papers on bridges and received merit awards from the CSCE, the ACI, and the PCI. He is a member of numerous associations and committees including Professional Engineers Ontario, Order of Engineers of Quebec, Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association, Transportation Research Board, Technical Committee of the CSA Bridge Code S6, and the International Association of Bridges and Structures.
