Overview
After participating in this lecture you will be able to:
- Determine the hydraulic conductivity (also called permeability) of soils.
- Determine the rate of flow through soil.
- Calculate flow under and within earth structures.
- Calculate pore water pressure and uplift seepage force.
- Appreciate the importance of flow of water through soils.
Description
The flow of water in soil may cause instability and failure of many geotechnical structures (e.g., excavation, embankments, dams, roads and bridges). This lecture focuses on 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional flow of water in soil. All key concepts including the mechanism of flow, rate of flow, determination of flow rate in different applications, and flow control will be explained and emphasis will be placed on the practical application of the information provided.
Course Contents
- Mechanism of flow in soil
- Soil permeability
- 1D and 2D flow through soil
- Seepage analysis for dams and retaining walls
- Impact of flow of water on stability of shoring systems and dams
Who Should Attend
Those who deal with construction related geotechnical engineering issues or need to build background on geotechnical analyses and design including:
- Civil, environmental and transportation engineers/technicians
- Geologists, city and public works officials/planners
Please note: You can check other time zones here.
Instructor

Mohammad T. Rayhani, PhD., P. Eng., is an associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering and Director of Geoengineering Research Group at Carleton University. He has over 20 years of industrial and research experience in the field of geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering, and has been involved in many engineering projects around the world in foundation design, landfill barrier systems, retaining walls, embankment dams and slope stability. His research mainly focuses on advanced foundation systems, soil and foundation improvement solutions for seismic resistant design, foundation design in permafrost, and geotechnical aspects of landfill design. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Western Ontario and he is the author of over 50 publications in different areas of geo-engineering. Dr. Rayhani is a member of CGS, OGG, ASCE, ISMFE, and a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
