Overview

Please note, This instructor-led course has specific dates and times:
This course is held online over 4 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone):

10 am to 1:45 pm Eastern Time (3.5 hours of instruction with a 15-minute break)

You can attend Days 1 & 2 (Planning) or Days 3 & 4 (Design), or all four days of the course.

After participating in this course, you will:

  • Have a good general understanding of roundabouts and where they are (and are not) appropriate
  • Have an understanding of the trade-offs associated with intersection design and what aspects of roundabout design maximize safety for all users
  • Know what operational analysis is required in order to design a roundabout with an appropriate level of traffic capacity
  • Acquire a basic knowledge of roundabout geometric design
  • Learn about the detailed design, maintenance and traffic information system associated with roundabouts

Description
This four-day course is an introduction to the planning and design of modern roundabouts.

Days one and two of the course cover planning considerations, including traffic analysis and assessment as to where roundabouts may be preferred over stop-controlled or signalized intersections because of capacity, safety or life cycle costs, as well as issues associated with pedestrian and cyclist accommodation, public outreach and maintenance. The capacity analysis discusses ARCADY, RODEL and HCM methodologies.

Days three and four focus on the geometric design of roundabouts and aspects of detailed design such as grading, signage and pavement markings, illumination and sightline requirements.

Course Outline

  • Roundabouts vs traffic circles and rotaries
  • Roundabout applications and safety
  • Accommodating pedestrians and cyclists
  • Roundabout capacity analysis and operations
  • Roundabout signage and markings
  • Controlling vehicle speeds at roundabouts
  • Developing basic horizontal design composition
  • High-speed and multi-lane approaches
  • Roundabout safety performance design checks
  • Design principles and pitfalls
  • Design examples – addressing unique conditions

Who Should Attend
Traffic Engineers • Project Engineers • Transportation Engineers • Designers • Infrastructure Managers • Municipal Managers and Administrators • Traffic Planners • Transportation Planners • Consulting Engineers

Special Feature
You can attend Days 1 & 2 (Planning), Days 3 & 4 (Design), or all four days of the course. Each day will start with introductions and an overview of the course and learning objectives.

Instructor

Mark T. Johnson, PE

Mark is the principal instructor for the MTJ Roundabout Academy. Mark has spent over 20 years applying and teaching about modern roundabouts to achieve traffic and transportation solutions within the overall context of the roadway system.

Mark’s work has included both public (city and state) and consultancy experience focused on traffic, transportation engineering and planning with roundabouts. Mark’s unparalleled level of experience spans all types of roundabout applications and contexts. Mark has been involved with the planning, design, and redesign of over 1,000 roundabouts. Mark was a co-author of the FHWA 2010 Roundabout Guide (NCHRP 672), a key contributor to the WIDOT Roundabout Program, and is an FHWA Peer-to-Peer Qualified Roundabout Reviewer.

Early on, Mark realized the importance of design for optimal safety and operations and sought out and received extensive training and mentorship from UK expert Barry Crown. Mr. Crown had this to say about Mark: “Asking the right questions is an invaluable skill that sets Mark apart from others, and he thinks ‘big picture’ before drilling down to the details.”

Mark is an active member of the TRB Committee on Roundabouts & Other Intersection Design Strategies and the ITE Roundabout Committee and has authored technical papers published by the TRB Transportation Research Record on important topics regarding roundabout design.
