Overview
This course is held online over 2 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone):
10 am to 6 pm Eastern Time
You have the option of attending Day 1 or 2 or both days of the course.
After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- Have a solid understanding of where roundabouts are effective and where they may not be suitable.
- Learn about the trade-offs in intersection design and how to optimize roundabout design for safety.
- Know the required operational analysis techniques to design roundabouts with the right traffic capacity.
- Acquire essential knowledge of the geometric design principles of roundabouts.
- Understand the detailed aspects of roundabout design, including maintenance and traffic information systems.
Description
This two-day course introduces the planning and design of modern roundabouts, covering both theoretical and practical aspects. You'll explore traffic analysis, geometric design, and the operational intricacies of roundabouts. As roundabouts are known to improve traffic flow, reduce collisions, and enhance safety, understanding their design and implementation is essential for traffic and transportation professionals.
This course equips you with the knowledge to make informed decisions about where roundabouts are suitable and how to design them effectively. You'll learn about intersection design trade-offs, safety optimization, and operational analysis techniques for traffic capacity. Additionally, you'll gain a solid foundation in roundabout geometric design and delve into the detailed aspects of design, maintenance, and traffic information systems.
Day One covers planning considerations, including traffic analysis, capacity, safety, life cycle costs, pedestrian and cyclist accommodation, public outreach, and maintenance. It also explores capacity analysis methodologies like ARCADY, SIDRA, and HCM.
Day Two focuses on the geometric design of roundabouts, including grading, signage, pavement markings, illumination, and sightline requirements.
Who Should Attend
This course is perfect for Traffic Engineers, Project Engineers, Transportation Engineers, Designers, Infrastructure Managers, Municipal Managers, Administrators, Traffic Planners, and Consulting Engineers looking to enhance their expertise in roundabout planning and design. Gain practical insights, enhance your skills, and stay ahead in your field.
This course equips you with the knowledge to bring innovative and effective roundabout solutions to your projects, ensuring safer and more efficient traffic management.
Special Feature:
You can attend either Day 1, Day 2, or both days of the course. Each day begins with introductions and an overview of the course and its learning objectives.

Instructor
Michael is a Senior Transportation Engineer at Harbourside Transportation Consultants – Dartmouth, NS.
He has over 28 years of experience in transportation, traffic engineering, and municipal design. He has managed various transportation projects, including highway and interchange design, roundabout design, traffic signal design, traffic studies, traffic modelling, and intersection modifications. Michael was the lead writer of the geometric design chapter of the TAC Canadian Roundabout Design Guide. He has presented numerous public consultation/information sessions to educate the public on the benefits of roundabouts and how to use them.
Michael has served as a project manager, lead designer, Arcady modeller and peer reviewer on roundabout projects in Canada and the U.S.
