Overview
This course is held online over 3 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone):
10:00 am to 6:00 pm Eastern

After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- Design new water distribution systems with an understanding of the fundamentals
- Analyze existing systems, pinpoint the problems and take corrective action
- Use the design software EPANET2 and be familiar with its features
Description
This course will present concepts and tools to analyze and design water distribution networks.
Topics covered will include fundamental hydraulic principles, an overview of design standards of water distribution systems, exposure to the industry-standard water distribution software EPANET2, and the application of that software to the design of a water system at the sub-division level.

Day 1
Review of Fluid Mechanics and Pipeline Hydraulics
- Overview of water distribution systems (purpose, components)
- Key definitions (e.g., elevation head, pressure head, velocity head, hydraulic grade line, energy grade line, average fluid velocity, etc)
- Review of boundary layer theory in pressurized pipe systems
- Conservation of mass (continuity)
- Conservation of energy
- Conservation of momentum
- Flow in pipes under pressure (Hazen-Williams and Darcy Weisbach equations)
- Review of the Moody diagram
- Pumps and their hydraulic properties (curves,
- Local losses and their hydraulic properties
- Valves and orifices and their hydraulic properties
- Solving simple linear reservoir-pipe-reservoir systems
- Introducing the Bernoulli (energy) equation
- Determining the system curve with Bernoulli’s equation
Day 2
Fundamentals of Water Distribution Network Analysis
- Solving simple systems with pipes in series and pipes in parallel
- Steady-state equations of flow in pipe networks
- Using the Hardy-Cross method to solve simple networks
- Quasi-steady state equations of flow in pipe networks
- Incompressible, unsteady flow equations in pipes (rigid water column model)
- Equations for the transport of constituents in pipe networks (chlorine, fluoride, etc)
- Overview of the key components of a water distribution system (source, storage, pumping, conveyance)
- Design requirements
- Peak demands and fire flow requirements
- Pressure requirements
- Per capita demand and variations in demand
- Predicting fire flows with Fire Underwriter’s Survey
Day 3
Application: Designing a Water Distribution System with EPANET2
- Introduction to EPANET2 model
- Modelling elements in EPANET2 (source, links, nodes, tanks, pumps, valves)
- Data requirements for hydraulic network analysis with EPANET2
- Data requirements for water quality analysis with EPANET2
- Case study: construction of an EPANET2 of a water main system in a sub-division
- Case study: using EPANET2 to size pipes in the sub-division pipe network
- Case study: using EPANET2 to analyze the water quality in a sub-division pipe network
Instructor
Dr. Yves Filion owns Hydro-Systems Consulting and is a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng.) with 20 years of research and consulting experience in municipal and environmental engineering.
During that time, Dr. Filion has been developing decision-support tools and technologies to support the water and municipal engineering community in making cost-effective decisions to design and rehabilitate water distribution systems. Dr. Filion is an international expert in water distribution systems analysis and optimization. Dr. Filion’s expertise in hydraulics is routinely sought by PEO, scientific advisory committees for international conferences in water distribution network modelling, and the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to review scientific proposals.
Dr. Filion is an Associate Editor with the ASCE Journal of Water Resources Planning & Management.
