After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Interact more effectively with other work groups involved in electricity transmission and distribution systems
  • Apply knowledge of power systems in regulatory work related to new electricity transmission and distribution facilities
  • Understand how arc flash occurs in distribution systems and its impact, safe engineering practices, and design considerations to mitigate arc flash
  • Connect with others about codes and standards applied to transmission and distribution systems
  • Understand the concept of line losses, their impacts on electric power systems and how to mitigate them

The course describes the fundamentals of electricity transmission and distribution in a classical power system. It defines what constitutes electricity transmission and distribution step by step. It explains the types of distribution systems, grounding and bonding, arc flash and mitigations, design considerations, codes and standards, and harmonics in a typical distribution system. The course describes types of transmission systems, AC versus DC transmission, poles, towers and other components, construction of new transmission systems, active and reactive losses, and loss compensation.

This course is intended to provide a clear understanding of transmission and distribution systems to professionals who, although qualified in their own disciplines, may have yet to receive formal electrical engineering training. However, this course is also designed to benefit engineers seeking to refresh their electricity transmission and distribution knowledge.

This course is designed for individuals associated with power system-related work but do not have a direct power system background. For example, regulators, legal services, engineers from disciplines other than electrical engineering, technicians involved in power system work, professionals from oil and gas industries, and electricity export/import market specialists will find this course helpful. In addition, professionals who need to refresh their current experience and knowledge of electricity transmission and distribution will also benefit from this course.

Amitabha Gangopadhyay, P Eng

Amitabha Gangopadhyay, M.Eng., P.Eng, is well recognized in power system engineering, where he has made many contributions to a wide range of power system applications during the past 35 years.

Prior to pursuing higher studies in Canada, Amitabha worked in the utility industry and with English Electric in India. In Canada, Amitabha has worked with Group Schneider, Global Thermoelectric, Fuel Cell Energy and SNC Lavalin in many areas of power system engineering. Currently, Amitabha works in regulatory matters related to the electric reliability of bulk power systems in North America.

His areas of interest are electrical transmission and distribution, protection and smart grid applications. Amitabha holds a Master's Degree from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. He has published several papers in international journals and conferences.

Amitabha is a professional engineer in the province of Alberta.
