This course is scheduled for 1 day (3 hours of instruction plus break)

11 am-2:30 pm Eastern

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the core principles of electricity and their application in power systems, electricity generation, transmission and distribution system overview.
  • Communicate effectively with power system planning, operation, and maintenance teams.
  • Apply knowledge of power systems in regulatory and operational contexts.
  • Recognize the components and configurations of both single and three-phase power systems.
  • Interpret power system diagrams and understand the function of various power system components in substations.

Description
Understanding the fundamentals of electricity is essential for anyone involved in the power industry, even if they don't have an electrical engineering background. This course delves into the basic principles of electricity, explaining how electric power systems are structured and how they function. You will explore key concepts such as voltage, current, and frequency and gain insights into DC and AC systems. The course also covers power generation using different energy sources like thermal, hydro, and nuclear and explains the significance of active and reactive power in maintaining system stability.

Participants will learn about the configuration of power systems, including single—and three-phase power, and the importance of balancing these systems. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the functions of various power system components in substations and how these are depicted in Single-Line Diagrams (SLDs). The course also explains active and reactive power, power system losses and balanced and unbalanced powers.

By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the knowledge to participate effectively in discussions and projects on power systems. Whether you're a professional in regulatory work, a technician, or someone from a non-electrical engineering discipline, this course offers valuable insights that will enhance your understanding and engagement with the electric power industry.

Who Should Attend
This course is ideal for professionals who work in areas related to power systems but lack a direct background in electrical engineering.

This comprehensive introduction to electricity fundamentals is especially valuable for regulators, legal professionals, and engineers from other disciplines involved in power system projects. It will also benefit technologists working in the power industry and those from the oil and gas sectors.

Additionally, this course will be advantageous for professionals in the electricity export/import markets or those seeking to refresh their knowledge of power systems.
