  • A brief overview of Risk Assessment of PHC impacted soil and groundwater
  • Risk Management Measures (RMMs) for a PHC impacted site as an alternative to Cleanup

Remediation of soil and groundwater impacted by PHCs involves several in situ or ex situ treatments comprising containment, separation and decomposition, which include biological, chemical, physical and thermal treatment methods.

Proper delineation of the soil and groundwater impact is the cornerstone for remediation meeting the regulatory guidelines, risk-based remediation and/or risk management. To select the best treatment option for remediation, it is important to understand the nature, composition, properties, type of environment, fate, transport and distribution of the pollutants, mechanism of degradation including chemical and biological decomposition. This two-day course provides practically applicable yet science-based instruction on delineation, remediation and risk management of soil and groundwater hydrocarbon contamination. Cost effective field techniques for investigating petroleum contamination will be reviewed in detail. Data interpretation and validation procedures will be presented. A case example will also be discussed.

Edwin Safari is a Professional Engineer and sessional lecturer at Physical and Environmental Sciences University of Toronto Scarborough. Edwin is the cofounder of Comnipex Corporation and is currently working on commercialization of his patented nano-graphene adsorbent technology for environmental remediation. Edwin has over 20 years of experience in academe and consulting in Environmental Engineering and Assessment. He has a proven track record of working and managing a variety of Environmental projects ranging from Environmental Site Assessment, Risk Assessment, Impact Assessment, Physical and Contaminant Hydrogeology, Waste Management Planning, Landfill Design, Leachate and Gas Management and Life Cycle Assessment. Edwin has been with EPIC for over four years and has offered Environmental Assessment, Risk Assessment and Remediation courses in various provinces in Canada.
