After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Know and understand the basic terminology and metrics used to quantify and assess noise
  • Perform basic acoustic calculations such as the addition of noise sources, distance sound attenuation, room acoustic parameters
  • Read and understand an environmental noise impact assessment report, including the terminology and methods
  • Understand acoustical criteria and ratings associated with various architectural specifications
  • Know and understand the importance of hearing conservation and methods to reduce hearing loss for workers

Description
Acoustics and noise control are components of many industrial and architectural projects. Professionals and technical workers sometimes need to deal with acoustics and noise control issues at some point in their careers. The objective of this course will be to learn the fundamentals of acoustics, the terminology and metrics used to quantify and assess noise and to gain a further understanding of how Engineers deal with acoustic issues for environmental noise, noise control inside buildings, HVAC noise, and occupational health noise.

The course material is structured to provide theory/background and examples and demonstrations to illustrate the various topics covered. There will be demonstrations of various acoustical measurement equipment and software.

In particular, sound level meters, monitors, environmental noise modelling and assessment software, and other audio and visual demonstrations. Questions are welcome and encouraged to stimulate interest and dialogue.

Instructor

Steven Bilawchuk, M.Sc., P.Eng.

Steven is an Engineer and principal partner with ACI Acoustical Consultants Inc., an Edmonton-based Engineering Consulting company specializing in noise and vibration.

Mr. Bilawchuk specializes in environmental noise impact assessments for oil and gas projects, utilities such as pipelines, and municipal transportation projects such as roadways and LRTs. Mr. Bilawchuk also works on architectural acoustics projects, including schools, office buildings, hospitals, etc. and conducts acoustic commissioning testing for various buildings such as schools and hospitals. Mr. Bilawchuk has conducted numerous 1 and 2-day courses on acoustics and noise control for industry, government, and educational institutions.

In addition to his work with ACI, Mr. Bilawchuk has worked as a sessional instructor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alberta, teaching a senior level course on Acoustics and Noise Control.
