After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics in component design of real thermal-Fluid systems.
  • Use analytical and empirical tools in the design and analysis of various thermal-fluid system components.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives while bearing in mind practical limitations and criteria.

Description
The success in achieving productivity targets and improving existing processes depends on one’s understanding and ability to assess system performance, perform accurate design and sizing calculations, and diagnose and troubleshoot faults.

Participants in this course will learn how to design, size, select, and assess the performance of various components in commonly used thermal-fluid system such as: gas transporting systems (fans, compressors, and ducts), liquid transporting systems (pumps and piping), and heat exchanging systems (shell and tube, double pipe, plate and frame and cross-flow heat exchangers). The materials presented in this course are for individuals who have little background on the subject; while also providing valuable information for personnel with thermal-fluid systems experience.

Instructor

Mohamed Hamed

Dr. Mohamed S. Hamed, PhD, P.Eng

Mohamed is a Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the founding director of the Thermal Processing Laboratory (TPL) at McMaster University. & has more than 35 years of industrial experience in the field of thermal engineering. Dr. Hamed has developed and presented numerous training courses and seminars in the field of HVAC and Refrigeration Systems, Renewable Energy Systems, Energy Conservation and Management, Boiling Heat Transfer, and Two-phase Flows. He has served as a consultant in many projects in Canada and abroad.

Dr. Hamed is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a member of various professional associations such as ASHRAE, ASM International, TMS, CSME, CFD Society of Canada, ASME, and a senior member of SME. He is also an editorial board member of the Transactions of the CSME, the International Journal of Microstructure and Materials Properties (IJMMP), and the International Journal of Computational Thermal Sciences.
