After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify causes of weld defects
  • Understand the welding defects tolerances of each standard
  • Understand why the tolerances vary for the same welding defect depending on the type of equipment, its position, orientation, etc.

Description:
Welding defects are the result of poor control of the essential and non-essential welding main variables described in the welding procedure specification. However, are all welding defects unacceptable by the chosen standards of construction? Yes, under certain limits.

This course will explain why some welding defects can be accepted, and at the same time reduce the costs of non-quality weld seams. This course will focus on the differences between each of the different construction standard philosophies and clarify why the same defect is at times accepted and/or rejected.

  • ASME Section VIII div. 1 (2017 edition), Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels
  • ASME Section VIII div. 2 (2017 edition), Alternative Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels
  • API 620 (12th edition, addenda 1), Design and Construction of Large, Welded, Low-pressure Storage Tanks
  • API 650 (12th edition, addendum 2), Welded Tanks for Oil Storage
  • ASME STS-1 (2016 edition), Steel Stacks
  • CSA W59 (2018 edition), Welded Steel Construction (Metal Arc Welding)
  • GB-150 (1998 edition, Chinese pressure vessel code), Steel Pressure Vessel
  • PD 5500 (2000 edition, British Standard for unfired fusion welded pressure vessels)

Instructor

Hugo Julien, ing., P.Eng.

M. Julien est ingénieur diplômé (1997) en génie mécanique avec une spécialisation en fabrication de l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. Il est membre de l’Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) et de l’Ontario (PEO), . Il a débuté sa carrière en 1998 dans le domaine des équipements sous pression et réservoirs de stockage à titre de concepteur et directeur qualité chez HC Vidal ltée (de 1998 à 2002). Ensuite, comme directeur des systèmes qualité chez Xebec inc. (de 2002 à 2007). Et enfin comme ingénieur séniors en équipements stationnaires industriels chez GCM Consultants (2007 à 2019). Il est maintenant ingénieur forensique chez CEP Forensique depuis 2019.

Il est responsable du blogue technique de GCM Consultants concernant l’intégrité des équipements stationnaires sur Linkedin (Stationary Equipment Integrity Technical Group) avec plus de 4000 membres mondiaux).
