After attending this course, you will be able to:

Pavement design and construction in densely populated urban environments can be complicated, and engineers must consider associated features such as curbs and gutters, utilities, and private and commercial entrances. Effective municipal pavement engineers should have a fundamental understanding of roadway design constraints and be able to select the appropriate pavement rehabilitation treatment that is not only cost-effective but also considerate of future needs.

The course will cover available pavement rehabilitation treatments and new pavement design and construction options, including flexible, rigid, and composite pavement types. This course will also review pavement-related construction specifications and highlight critical features during construction inspection.

Sam Esfandiarpour, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Sam is a Senior Pavement Engineer at Thurber Engineering Ltd. with over 12 years of academic and industry experience in pavement and material engineering. He has been involved in many provincial, municipal, and private pavement and geotechnical projects throughout Canada. His experience includes destructive and non-destructive pavement investigation, flexible and rigid pavement designs, AASHTOW are Pavement ME Analysis and Design, and construction and material quality control.

Sam has presented his work at many conferences in North America and is the author and co-author of several conference and journal papers. He is a peer reviewer for Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering and is an active member of the Transportation association of Canada (TAC) ME Design User Group and has advanced knowledge of the design inputs requirements for the AASHTOWare Pavement ME. He is also member of Canadian Technical Asphalt Association, and is registered engineer in Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
