This course is held online over 2 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone):
9:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern
After participating in this seminar, you will be able to:
- Identify factors that impact landfill site selection, design, operation and management
- Learn the criteria used in the design, implementation and management of landfills
- Review the design implementation process for landfills
- Develop an understanding of the functions of cover and liner systems

Description:
The management of landfill sites is becoming an ever challenging task. Impact of leachate from landfills on groundwater quality is a major concern from public health, environmental and regulatory perspectives. Additional concerns arise due to gas migration which can result in odours, the escape of combustible gases, and landfill stability and settlement issues. To avoid such issues, the designer and landfill manager must thoroughly understand the mechanisms of protection, movement, monitoring and control of leachate and gas.
This course focuses on optimizing the performance of landfills from design to post-closure phases, and deals comprehensively with the topics of great concern to landfill designers and managers.

Instructor

Mohammad T. Rayhani, PhD., P. Eng., is an associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering and Director of Geoengineering Research Group at Carleton University. He has over 20 years of industrial and research experience in the field of geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering, and has been involved in many engineering projects around the world in foundation design, landfill barrier systems, retaining walls, embankment dams and slope stability. His research mainly focuses on advanced foundation systems, soil and foundation improvement solutions for seismic resistant design, foundation design in permafrost, and geotechnical aspects of landfill design. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Western Ontario and he is the author of over 50 publications in different areas of geo-engineering. Dr. Rayhani is a member of CGS, OGG, ASCE, ISMFE, and a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
