Engagement in Learning

Learning is an active process that requires commitment and participation. Students are expected to take ownership of their education while instructors facilitate and guide them. EPIC takes pride in its contribution to the engineering profession by providing training that makes engineers better. We believe that the honourable approach to this is through helping engineers become better at thinking creatively from first principles when faced with technical problems, not through providing shortcuts that discourage learning and promote complacency.

Student's Role

  • Engage with course materials, ask questions, and contribute to discussions.
  • Dedicate appropriate time outside class to study-typically 10 hours per week per course.
  • Come to class prepared, having reviewed relevant materials and homework.
  • Take responsibility for understanding the fundamentals and applying them to solve problems.
  • Prepare to approach exam questions using critical thinking from first principles.
  • Participate actively in group assignments and projects.
  • Offer help and encouragement to peers who may be struggling.
  • Share knowledge and resources responsibly while adhering to academic integrity.
  • Course materials are copyrighted by the instructor and are not to be shared without explicit consent from the instructor.

Instructor's Role

  • Act as the facilitator, guide, and coach.
  • Provide clear instructions, constructive feedback, and support for all students.
  • Make a variety of resources available, such as notes, recorded classes, and/or web links, if deemed beneficial to learning.
  • Instructors are not required to interact with students outside of class time; however, they may respond to emailed questions at their own discretion.
  • Instructors may adjust the course schedule based on exam schedules.
  • In certain situations, an instructor may need to cancel and reschedule a session. This is handled on a case-by-case basis and is up to the instructors' discretion.

Student/Instructor Code of Conduct

The following guidelines outline expectations for maintaining a respectful and productive learning environment in continuing education courses.

  • All participants are expected to contribute to a positive and inclusive atmosphere conducive to learning and respectful of one another.
  • Insults, disrespectful behaviour or the use of foul language will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  • Students must engage respectfully with peers and instructors, fostering an environment where everyone feels safe to learn and share ideas.
  • Failure to adhere to these principles may result in removal from the course at the instructor’s discretion.

Technical Exams Preparation Program FAQs

Will the classes be recorded?

  • Instructors may choose to record classes and share them with students to enhance learning.
  • The recording of classes by participants is not allowed.

How many hours do I need to study?

  • About 10 hours per week per course is expected for studying. This is an integral part of ensuring success. Simply attending classes is not sufficient.
  • Student active participation is required during and outside class time.
  • The instructor's role is to facilitate and guide students to understand the material to prepare them to be better engineers, not to prepare them to simply pass their exams.

Will I get solutions to old exam problems?

  • The focus of the course is on teaching the fundamentals of engineering and making sure that those foundations are understood.
  • The focus is on teaching students to think from first principles and therefore allowing them to apply their knowledge to solve any exam question that might come up.
  • Previous exam questions made available by the regulatory bodies are typically used as supporting materials for learning. However, the focus of the class is to understand the first principles to react and adapt to ever-changing exam questions and formats.

Can I email my instructor with questions?

  • Instructors, at their own discretion, may respond to email questions related to a student's learning. However, we ask that the number of email questions be limited as the shared learning experience is intended for the entire class. Note that in certain examples, an instructor may defer some questions to the online session to share the transfer of knowledge with the entire class
