Description:
A surge arrester is a device to protect electrical equipment from overvoltage transients caused by external, lightning overvoltage, or internal, switching overvoltage events. This class of device is used to protect equipment in power transmission and distribution systems.

Surge Arresters are the primary protection against atmospheric and switching overvoltages. They are generally connected in parallel with the equipment to be protected to divert the surge current. The active elements of surge arresters are manufactured using a highly non-linear ceramic resistor material, composed primarily of zinc oxide mixed with other metal oxides and sintered together.

This presentation is an overview of the high voltage surge arresters application, including functioning, construction, selection, historical development, and a short overview of the last generation of surge arresters before the introduction of the metal-oxide arrester, that is, the gapped silicon-carbide arrester, which is still being extensively used today.

This presentation will provide information on how to reduce the risk of insulation failure of key electrical equipment, minimize outages, improve system reliability and reduce costs. The presentation covers both conventional valve-type surge arresters as well as the metal oxide devices.
