After participating in this course, you will be able to:
- Gain detailed knowledge of current trenchless technology construction methods
- Understand advantages and benefits of each trenchless technology technique
- Determine design specifications, dimension, and required jacking loads based on existing mechanical methods
- Use existing trenchless technology guidelines and design standards in selecting appropriate trenchless technology method
- Learn estimate jacking forces
The aging underground infrastructure and extensive utilities of Canadian cities requires their renewal and rehabilitation. Conventional trenching methods however can be very disruptive in congested urban areas, high-traffic roads and highways and business owners. Trenchless technology construction methods are developed and increasingly used for installing new pipelines, or utility lines without trenching excavation.
Knowledge of the challenges, specification and design requirements of trenchless technology methods would lead to better selection and operation of these methods.

Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Ph.D., P. Eng.
Dr. Sadrekarimi is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Western University (London, Ontario). Dr. Sadrekarimi’s academic and professional expertise involve soil mechanics, foundation engineering, deep foundations, dam, advanced soil testing and characterization of soil behavior, in-situ testing, soil dynamics and geotechnical earthquake engineering, static and dynamic analysis of retaining walls, buried structures, and slope stability analysis. He joined Western after several years of engineering practical experience at Golder Associates Ltd. Dr. Sadrekarimi has over 50 published papers in peer-reviewed conference proceedings and journals. Dr. Sadrekarimi is a member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMFE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Canadian Geotechnical Society, research director of Western’s Geotechnical Research Centre (GRC), and an associate editor of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal.
