Cost Effective Assessment of Pavement Condition
Jul 22, 2020 /
Course Code: 0706-WEB20
In the 1970s, pavement condition inspection was typically completed using visual techniques and was based on observable pavement distresses. Ride quality assessment was also visual and structural capacity was measured using a simple Benkelman beam and loaded dump truck. Fast forward to today and we now have the ability to measure every crack on the surface of the pavement using high speed laser technology and be able to measure the surface deflection of the pavement to a thousandth of a millimeter accuracy. The equipment is complicated and quite expensive to own and operate. Is “automated” equipment necessary and if so, how is it better and how can it be used cost-effectively to support engineering decision making?
This webinar outlines methods of evaluating the structural and functional condition of pavements. These types of assessments are used to objectively and systematically determine the condition and “issues” that may result in a reduced pavement life, determine the most economically maintenance and rehabilitation methods and timing or to ensure the travelling public is provided a safe and comfortable ride. Assessments can range from a simple visual assessment to more comprehensive non-destructive testing to measure surface distresses, ride quality, surface skid resistance and response to traffic loading.Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Eastern Time
