10 am to 2 pm Eastern (Will include a 30-minute break)
After participating in this course, you will be able to:

- master window detailing to make windows an integral part of the building envelope
- become knowledgeable about new developments to make windows efficient energy filters
- increase the on-site performance of windows
- strengthen your retrofitting skills to make windows an efficient building component
Windows are the most complicated and challenging part of the building envelope, for they must meet the requirements of the National Building Code without violating budgets. Also, windows are expected to admit and retain heat in winter, control heat gain in the summer, block noise, permit ventilation air to enter while keeping the rain out, remain clear and free of condensation, allow sunlight to enter while not causing discomfort due to glare, and shield occupants from odours and airborne pollutants. Selecting and retrofitting windows to meet these diverse requirements is a significant challenge for the owner.
This course will discuss performance requirements, installation and retrofit considerations, standards, testing, specifying and selecting. Problems experienced with windows on building projects and successful solutions will also be presented. A workshop on the actual performance of windows helps you learn ways to increase the performance of your windows.

- The instructor will comment on every presentation & make a list of issues relating to performance on site needing further consideration. He will seek participants' input to add to the list & then turn over the list to participants to discuss in small groups. Reports from the groups will be presented for further discussion.

Martin has over 35 years of experience and is the president of BEST Consultants Martin Gerskup Architect Inc. He specializes in the field of investigative architecture and building science with particular emphasis on the resolution of problems affecting the building envelope. Martin is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) and has served in various capacities on the Ontario Building Envelope Council (OBEC) Board of Directors from 1991 to 1997.
He was president of OBEC from 1993 to 1994, a member of the council for the OAA from 2003 to 2005, and a member of the ULC Thermal Insulation Committee. During his tenure on the council at the OAA, Mr. Gerskup was Chair of the Discipline Committee while also serving on the following committees: Practice Committee, Registration Committee, Public Interest Review Committee, Communications Committee, and the University Liaison Task Group.
In addition to authoring and presenting many technical papers on the subject of building science, Mr. Gerskup taught as an assistant adjunct professor and tutor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design from 1999 to 2001 and at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Ryerson University in 2002.
