Advanced Design and Behaviour of Steel Structures

Fee: $1,645 / Online / Mar 22 - 23, 2027 / Course Code: 17-0334-ONL27

OVERVIEW

Please note, This instructor-led course has specific dates and times:

This course is held online over 2 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone): 9:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern (Will include the usual breaks) NOTE: Please note that all attendees must sign a Confidentiality Agreement prior to receiving the course notes for this online offering.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

 • Evaluate stability, buckling behavior, and failure modes in steel structural systems
 • Design and assess bolted and welded connections for strength, performance, and reliability
 • Apply seismic and fire-resistant design strategies to improve structural resilience
 • Analyze complex steel systems using advanced structural analysis approaches, including FEA
 • Integrate sustainability considerations into steel design decisions

Description

Steel structures are expected to perform reliably under increasingly complex loading, environmental, and regulatory conditions. Challenges related to stability, connection performance, seismic demand, and fire exposure require more advanced analysis and design approaches than those used in conventional practice.

This course addresses these challenges by strengthening the ability to evaluate structural behaviour and make sound design decisions across a range of real-world conditions. Key areas include stability and buckling, connection design, and the performance of steel systems subjected to extreme events such as earthquakes and fire.

Through a structured, application-focused approach, this course develops practical capabilities in advanced analysis methods, including finite element modelling, while reinforcing decision-making related to safety, reliability, and long-term performance.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for:

 • Structural and design engineers working with steel systems
 • Engineering consultants involved in advanced analysis or design review
 • Project managers responsible for complex structural projects
 • Contractors and inspectors engaged in steel construction and performance verification
 • Technical professionals seeking to strengthen applied steel design capabilities

Special Requirements

Participants should have access to the Handbook of Steel Construction, 12th edition
