Design of Buried Pipelines

Fee: $1,595 / Online / Mar 4 - 5, 2027 / Course Code: 17-0308-ONL27

OVERVIEW

Please note, This instructor-led course has specific dates and times:

This course is held online over 2 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone): 9:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern (Will include the usual breaks) It is highly recommended that upon completion of this basic course, participants take the advanced course of “Design of Buried Pipelines - An Advanced Approach” to enhance their knowledge. Please note that it is a requirement for all attendees to sign a "Confidentiality Agreement" prior to receiving the course notes for this online offering.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine and evaluate loads acting on buried pipelines under real operating conditions
  • Design buried gravity flow and pressure pipelines using established engineering methods
  • Assess pipe–soil interaction to support safe and reliable infrastructure performance
  • Identify failure risks and apply design strategies to improve long-term durability
  • Apply practical design considerations for installation, materials selection, and environmental loading

Description

Buried pipeline systems are critical to infrastructure performance, yet their behaviour is influenced by complex interactions between soil conditions, loading scenarios, material properties, and installation practices. Misjudgments in design or installation can lead to structural failures, service disruptions, and costly remediation.

This course focuses on the practical challenges involved in designing buried gravity and pressure pipelines under real-world conditions. It addresses how loads develop and transfer, how pipe–soil interaction affects performance, and how different materials respond to combined loading, environmental factors, and installation constraints.

Through applied examples and structured engineering approaches, this course provides the tools needed to design buried pipeline systems with confidence. The result is improved reliability, reduced risk of failure, and more effective decision-making in pipeline design and installation.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for:

  • Civil, geotechnical, and pipeline engineers
  • Engineering technologists and technical specialists involved in infrastructure design
  • Contractors and professionals responsible for pipeline installation and construction
  • Professionals involved in municipal infrastructure, utilities, and asset management
  • Early-career to experienced practitioners seeking to strengthen applied pipeline design skills
