Foundation Design

Fee: $2,345 / Online / May 3 - 5, 2027 / Course Code: 18-0504-ONL27

OVERVIEW

Please note, This instructor-led course has specific dates and times:

This course is held online over 3 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone): 9:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern Time

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Assess key foundation design principles and identify geotechnical issues that affect foundation performance.
  • Plan appropriate site exploration and laboratory testing programs for foundation engineering projects.
  • Apply national and provincial foundation design requirements to support safe and compliant engineering decisions.
  • Analyze shallow and deep foundation systems under vertical and lateral loading conditions.
  • Evaluate settlement, bearing capacity, pile behaviour, and design considerations using practical engineering methods and case-based examples.

Description

Foundation design requires engineers and technical professionals to make decisions with incomplete subsurface information, varied loading conditions, and strict safety and performance requirements. Whether you are working on buildings, bridges, power plants, transportation infrastructure, or municipal works, the foundation system must be designed to transfer loads safely while managing settlement, stability, constructability, and long-term serviceability.

This course provides a structured review of shallow and deep foundation design, with emphasis on the soil mechanics concepts, subsurface investigation methods, laboratory characterization programs, and design standards that support sound engineering judgment. You will examine how foundation systems respond to vertical and horizontal loads, how to evaluate bearing capacity and settlement, and how to address key design considerations for mat foundations, single piles, and pile groups.

Through practical examples and case studies, you will strengthen your ability to connect geotechnical data, design requirements, and project constraints to foundation design decisions. The course is intended to support more consistent, defensible, and effective foundation engineering practice.

Who This Course Is For

This course is designed for:

  • Civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation, municipal, environmental, construction, and mining engineers
  • Engineering technologists and technicians involved in foundation-related projects
  • General contractors, construction supervisors, and project managers working with foundation systems
  • Plant engineers, geologists, earth scientists, and environmental consultants seeking a stronger foundation design background
  • Architects, urban planners, educators, and researchers who work with infrastructure, construction, or geotechnical engineering projects
  • Early-career through experienced professionals who need to strengthen their applied understanding of shallow and deep foundation systems
