Culvert Design and Inspection

Fee: $785 / Online / Dec 6 - 7, 2027 / Course Code: 18-1202-ONL27

OVERVIEW

Please note, This instructor-led course has specific dates and times:

This course is held online over 2 days on the following schedule (All times in Eastern Time Zone): 10 am to 3 pm Eastern (Will include the usual breaks)

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply basic hydrology and hydraulic principles to common culvert and drainage problems

  • Assess how culvert design, condition, hydraulics, and service life affect infrastructure performance

  • Review culvert inspection methods and identify key indicators of deterioration or risk

  • Evaluate practical maintenance options for culvert assets

  • Recognize relevant design, inspection, and regulatory considerations that affect culvert management

Description

Culverts play a critical role in protecting roads, properties, and communities from flooding, erosion, and drainage-related damage. When culverts are poorly designed, inadequately maintained, or misunderstood during inspection and review, the consequences can include service disruptions, avoidable repair costs, regulatory issues, and increased public safety risk.

As an engineer, technologist, inspector, reviewer, or infrastructure professional, you may be asked to assess culvert performance, review condition reports, support maintenance decisions, or understand whether a culvert is meeting its intended drainage function. These responsibilities require more than a basic awareness of drainage systems. They require a practical understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, inspection findings, service life, design limitations, and rehabilitation options.

This course provides a structured introduction to culvert design, installation, and inspection across the asset lifecycle. Through lectures, real-world examples, hands-on exercises, and problem-solving activities, you will build the foundational knowledge needed to review culvert performance, interpret inspection information, and support sound decisions related to maintenance, repair, risk, and regulatory compliance.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for professionals who need a practical working knowledge of culverts, drainage systems, and related hydrotechnical concepts, including:
