After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand AC and DC electricity principles, concepts, and distinctions.
  • Apply mathematics and physics techniques for analyzing AC and DC systems in electronics and electrical power domains
  • Understand the role of voltage and current angles in determining the power factor.
  • Use vector methods to illustrate power factor theory and apply different methods for calculating leading and lagging power factors
  • Understand how power factor correcting capacitors improve power factors and avoid adding too much capacitance 
  • Apply electrical system concepts like power quality, load factor, service factor, demand, peak demand, and the distinction between electrical energy and electrical power, and use associated engineering computation formulas and methods
  • Know the difference between three-phase AC, "Y" and "∆ - Delta" configurations of loads and sources and their significance in practical power distribution and application
  • Gain familiarity with power distribution equipment and instrumentation, Electrical Code's role in electrical design, safety, arc flash hazards, interpreting electrical diagrams, and calculating electrical power bills under large industrial and commercial contract scenarios

Description
This course covers the principles of electricity in a simple, easy-to-understand format. It is themed after a book published by the instructor, titled: "Electrical Engineering for Non-electrical Engineers." In the book, as well as this seminar, Rauf uses simple analogies and practical, day-to-day examples to illustrate the otherwise abstract concepts of electrical engineering.

Upon attending this course, participants will be able to perform straightforward and common calculations associated with voltage, current, resistance, circuit analysis, DC, single-phase AC, three-phase AC, power, power factor, service factor, load factor, and much more. Practical examples of electrical equipment applications in industrial, commercial, and institutional settings are covered.

Discussions on electrical equipment, components, safety electronic devices, and test instrumentation are included. Essential concepts in electrical safety are introduced.
