After participating in the seminar, you will be able to:

  • Understand the properties, types, and historical development of commercial explosives.
  • Design effective surface and underground blast patterns using industry-standard techniques.
  • Analyze rock dynamics, fragmentation, and environmental impacts such as vibration and noise.
  • Select appropriate drilling equipment and evaluate drilling performance metrics.
  • Apply modern software tools and case study insights to optimize drilling and blasting operations.

Description
This course provides engineers with an introductory overview of modern drilling and blasting techniques in both surface and underground mining operations. Participants will gain a solid foundation in explosive properties, initiation systems, and wave transmission in rock, followed by practical insights into blast design for both surface and underground environments.

The final day focuses on drilling techniques, equipment selection, and performance evaluation, including an introduction to mechanized excavation systems such as TBMs and raiseborers. Through a blend of lectures, interactive discussions, and case studies, attendees will develop the technical knowledge and analytical skills needed to enhance safety, efficiency, and productivity in mining operations.

Day I - Fundamentals of Explosives and Blasting

    Basic characteristics and classifications of commercial explosives.
  • Historical Overview & Types of Explosives
    Evolution of explosives: black powder, dynamite, TNT, ANFO, and emulsions.
  • Principles of Priming & Initiation Systems
    Use of detonators, boosters, and initiation sequencing in blasting operations.
  • Wave Transmission in Rock
    Fundamentals of stress wave propagation, energy transfer, and fragmentation.

Day II - Blast Design, Analysis, and Applications

  • Surface Blast Design
    Bench design parameters: burden, spacing, stemming, and charge calculations.
  • Underground Metal and Nonmetal Blasting
    Blasting techniques and considerations for confined environments.
  • Rock Dynamics and Fragmentation
    Impact of rock properties on blast performance and fragmentation outcomes.
  • Blasting Vibrations and Noise
    Measurement methods, control techniques, and compliance with regulations.

Instructor

Mehrdad Kermani, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Mehrdad has over 10 years of experience on Geotechnical, Civil and Mining engineering projects combined with academic and research experience.

He is currently research associate and sessional lecturer at McGill University in the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering and has a sound knowledge of soil, rock and concrete testing.
