By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Interpret and apply Part 3 requirements to the design, review, and construction of large buildings

  • Determine applicable requirements based on occupancy, building size, construction type, fire protection, life safety, and accessibility considerations

  • Assess how building classification, height, area, spatial separation, and fire protection measures influence code-compliance decisions

  • Use the objectives and functional statements of the National Building Code to evaluate proposed solutions and justify compliance decisions

  • Identify and address Code issues that may affect public safety, regulatory approval, design coordination, and construction quality

Description

Applying the National Building Code to a large or complex building rarely involves interpreting a single requirement in isolation. Occupancy, building size and height, construction type, fire protection, egress, accessibility, structural design, and building systems can interact in ways that affect whether a proposed design satisfies the Code. Recognizing those relationships is essential when reviewing designs, resolving compliance questions, or determining how a change in one area may affect requirements elsewhere.

This course develops a structured approach to navigating and applying the National Building Code to large buildings, with particular emphasis on Part 3. You will examine how building classification and design decisions establish the requirements that follow. Practical examples and guided discussion will explore occupancy, fire protection, construction, spatial separation, occupant safety, accessibility. Supporting overview address structural design, environmental separation, and related building systems, construction-site safety, farm buildings, and alterations to existing buildings.

By working directly with the Code, you will strengthen your ability to identify applicable provisions, trace the relationship between requirements, and evaluate proposed solutions in context. You will leave better prepared to recognize potential compliance issues, explain the basis for your interpretations, and make well-reasoned decisions that support safe, coordinated, and Code-compliant building design and construction.
